I have nazi tattoos all over and nobody has punched me for it yet. Your argument is invalid.

As for me, I'm not in America and what we say can be held against us. I know in places like Germany and UK just criticizing a politician or making a joke about them can land you in jail or a hefty fine. It's a bit like the wild west here on soj.ooo but it's still very new and people will settle into there respective communities. I have high hopes here and use it as a tool for challenging my perspectives and prejudices.

I would pose the question, why do you think twice before posting on YouTube? Are you only posting or wanting to post things that are shit-starting? Then it is good that you think twice. I think before posting as well, not out of concern about someone knowing who I am, but more, is what I have or want to say worth whatever reaction will come from the other posters. You are correct there are some expert shit-starters on here and honestly they do take away from the benefit of the site. They are the ones that you can point to and say, this is why we can't have nice things. But some people are just jerks. That is why I did pose ideas about guardrails for pochas, mods, and users for @dangun to consider that could provide proactive spaces for the productive exchange of ideas to take place. I absolutely agree with @dangun that anonymity is important. And how much one chooses to use is up to them. I was very vocal when FB wanted to ban users not using their real names, it created a huge limit on some people to be able to have contact with friends and families, it prevent other people from being able to communicate and get "real information". There are a lot of reasons to preserve as many options as possible for people to have anonymity online.

I think twice before posting because sometimes I'm also an idiot and my instinct is to post an angry message or whatever. Then I think to myself *"this is not how I want to portray myself to the world"*. Whether it's anonymous or not. Some people don't have that.

And that is a good way to be 🙂 and those others do not have that filter in real life either, in a lot of cases.

Anonymity is important. Far too often for stating facts, said messengers are discredited thru unrelated attacks. The message that deserved to be disseminated as truth, then, becomes muddy. Anonymity doesn't suffer from this systemic problem. I agree that anonymity allows for speech that can sometimes be considered vial - and if one should so much as disagree with said statements, there are several options including but not limited to simply ignoring it or replying with a rebuttal. Discussion is important after all. Insofar as your post's contents relating to posting on youtube and thus losing anonymity, that is very unfortunate, but could have been avoided with different privacy opsec and further, it is really your choice to limit your own speech be it out of respect, kindness or fear or what have you. That said, coming to the conclusion that because you have to suffer from said limitations that everyone else should seems a bit unfair and against the ethos of free speech, don't you think? As we have learned with the proliferation of LLMs^1^ among other things, sometimes the best understanding of situations and ideas comes from simply using language (e.g., speech). **As a result, limiting free speech is no different from limiting the people's ability to think,** which I think you admittedly tend to agree that lack of anonymity seems to do. I hope this gives you a different viewpoint of anonymity, generally. Yes, it's a double edged sword, but yes, one of those edges are for the freedom and rights of the people. We, the people and society, shouldn't take the rights of all people away (punish them) just because of a few bad actors right? Wouldn't that be unfair? ^1 Large language models (AI)^

I personally don't see being forced to use my real name as limiting free speech. I see it as a way of POTENTIALLY being held accountable for what you are saying and I don't see anything wrong with accountability.

ones ability that chooses what they would not like to see, is different than censoring free speech. The question is how far to tune the levels of preference. Freedom of speech is key, in todays age of this we all agree.
