The reason the Old Testament is so violent is because God was punishing people who were doing genuinely evil things, like child sacrifice and sodomy. None of the killings in the OT were unjustified because God is a just God. 9:5 in the Quran says to kill idolaters, but by that logic Christians are idolators for worshipping Our Lord. is it right to kill Christians because Muslims believe Allah has willed it?

I'm glad you asked and allowed me to clarify this. I'm not a scholar so I'll share this very very short video that explains it better  As for general rule, it's given in Quran 2:193 "Fight against them until there is no more persecution, and your devotion will be to Allah alone. If they stop persecuting you, let there be no hostility except against the aggressors". Muslims aren't allowed to fight or kill peaceful people. Anyone that does, is misusing and twisting the meanings and will be punished in the same manner as if they had unjustifiably killed a Muslim .  May we understand each other better and live in peace 🙏
