I think it's a subtle way to help new posts in less popular pochas gain eyeballs. Since if someone comes in and posts, while a flame war is clogging up the main feed, or someone is spamming. It keeps it's place as a "New post" in the sidebar giving is equal chance to garner some eyeballs.

Being able to see new posts would be nice. If I scroll the site, I see the same posts all the time.

same, plus theres plenty of room in the sidebar, and much of the current sidebar is redundant
