Picked up this 2003-S Maine silver proof quarter for $15 shipped. Not a bad addition to the silver stack, and it comes with an interesting piece of Maine history. First, the silver breakdown: \- **Composition:** 90% silver, 10% copper \- **Total weight:** 6.25 grams (my scale reads 6.3g) \- **Actual silver content:** 5.625 grams \- **Pure silver:** 0.1808 troy ounces \- **Silver spot price:** $49.11/oz (Oct. 30, 2026) \- **Silver melt value:** $8.88 \- **Purchase price:** $15, including shipping \- **Premium over melt:** $6.12, or approximately 69% So I paid a bit of a premium over melt, but it's a collectible proof quarter, and I always appreciate free shipping. Now for the history. The reverse features Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and a three-masted schooner resembling the *Victory Chimes*. Built in 1900, the *Victory Chimes* spent decades sailing the Maine coast out of Rockland. She was the last surviving Chesapeake ram schooner and a National Historic Landmark. In 2023, she was sold for just $75,900 to New York restaurant operators who planned to convert her into a floating restaurant. Unfortunately, she never became one. On July 4, 2026, the 126-year-old schooner sank while moored in Brooklyn. As of September, she was still sitting at the bottom of the harbor, with her future uncertain. Think about that. A wooden sailing vessel survived two world wars, the Great Depression, and more than a century of maritime history, only to sink three years after being sold to restaurant operators. At least the one on my quarter is still above water. For $15 shipped, I got 5.625 grams of silver, a collectible proof coin, and a little piece of Maine maritime history. **Sometimes the story behind the silver is worth more than the silver itself.**

Synchronicity. My dad’s small lake home of many years (basically an old hunting cabin) is very near lake pemaquid. One lake over. Small world. synchronicities are neat things.
