Ok I went back and reviewed how to soj.ooo I understand why we may not want people to edit or delete their posts, but I think at least there should be a feature that would allow me to add a correction as the OP which appears at the top alongside the post, otherwise my correction comment may disappear among the other comments. Or edits can be allowed but the original post should be preserved and made viewable to readers.

A good habit is to reread your post or comment before you hit the post button, that will give you the opportunity to catch mistakes or clarify thoughts or ideas. 🙂

I agree but everyone inevitably misses something. Also, maybe in OP I've misunderstood something and want to issue a clarification alongside the post so as to not continue giving people an incorrect understanding

Not to mention some people have reading and writing disabilities. Sometimes you cannot see the mistakes no matter how hard you check. I think your idea of keeping the original post and having an edited one as well is a very good one.

I agree that accessibility is important for everyone. But I also feel like if everyone knows that no one can edit than we all realize that we all make mistakes and will have more brevity with each other allowing for mistakes and corrections and changes of mind.

I understand that premise too. It feels like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of a deal. That's why I said we should have the best of both worlds. Allowing edits but also keeping that original post easily accesible for transparency's sake

right what im saying though is trolls will post something. Then get a bunch of replies. And then switch the post out. And some cnn journalist will come in and screenshot and do a gotcha. Or something along those lines im just theory crafting. You can be right and have the proof of the original op, but the headline will be run and the retractions are never seen. This is the internet and underestimating the evil and creativity of humans is an easy thing to do.

Oh yeah, I get that. That's why I always say, whatever we do, some asshole will eventually twist it to fit their narrative. Just to spread evil and missinformation. We just gotta do the best we can and not let those people control us or what we do. It is what it is.

There is a feature to pin comments to an op possibly in the works i've seen it discussed, where you could pin a small handful or atleast one comment to an op afterwards, but nothing for certain. Lots of features are being added and tested every day. The problem with adding any type of Edit system. Is then the edit feature has to be global, if you get to edit what you say then everyone who replied needs to be able to edit what they say after you edit. And then the slippery slope is slid. I know you have pure intentions, but there are people who do not have pure intentions, and they will use an edit feature for gotcha situations. your idea of an OP and an E-OP is strong but I dont make the rules. I also think it may be a bit confusing and unintuitive especially new users. like "Why are there 2 versions of this post" "Which am i supposed to read"?? either way you can atleast always comment on your own post, it's not totally ideal I wouldnt be against something like where the OP is ALWAYS the OP. But there is a little icon on the bottom called "revisions" where if you click on it, it displays an edited post. @dangun makes the rules

If it's an issues with people abusing post editing for their own nefarious goals then a good solution might be an "Errata list/sheet" feature. This is something that publications and textbooks will include if the originally published text contains errors or factual mistakes. The errata will contain the original mistake plus the fix or corrections for it. How would this be different from my initial ideas? The way I imagine it is you click a button to fix some errors or mistakes, then you get prompted to select (not edit) the text from your OP where the mistake/error is, then you get prompted to input your correction. After finishing, your mistake and its correction appear at the bottom of your OP, along with other mistakes & corrections. To ensure that people don't make an entirely new post within their correction, a character limit can be added per correction. Also. corrections could be made uneditable Pros of this idea: it's closer to the original vision for soj.ooo, minimizes abuse, and makes it clear to everyone what the Errata sheet/list is. Cons: it's not very flexible, the feature could become convoluted if not done well and consequently it would be hard to get right.

Yes all good points it is good to brainstorm ideas. To be honest one of my favorite things about reddit i miss was live game threads. Where someone posts about what is happening in a sports game or event live. Useful for when you cannot watch something. Live game threads require hundreds of edits sometimes. So im not necessarily against edits. Its all very tricky😩

I like the idea of the OP being able to pin a reply/comment to the post that stays at the top of the thread so that people can read the original and then the Errata that is in the pinned comment/reply to the post.

Also just want to point out that this very post I made is a good example of this problem: I totally misunderstood something, posted about it, went back and checked, realized my mistake, and went back to try and correct it. I realize that in this instance it worked out well and sparked a good conversation, but I think it worked out this because the community is small at this stage (~2k users), but what would have happened if there were a lot more users? My correction comment might have disappeared below other comments that may have been bumped higher than mine. I know that Matt and co wanted everyone to have an equal voice on this platform, but I think by virtue of the OP being the OP, their voice is louder than everyone else in their own post. So as the OP and driver of the conversation, one should be able to correct or remove mistakes so that the OP is not misunderstood and the convo goes the wrong way.

chalk it up to the game, start over. Eventually the good post will be so much more popular and supersede the mistake. anyone who finds the old one will just have a chuckle at the mistake, which we all make.

100%, it doesn't matter right now. But when there's 10x more users there'll be a bunch of clutter that doesn't need to be there. Right now my messy self and dodgy mobile we can deal with
