If your thinking modern day expression of islam, I guess you can make that case but if you look at for example the Ottomans, its a completely different story, as well as the seljuks. We can even make the case for the abbasid and ummayds as well. Especially the Ottomans were not a lesser evil they were the force repelling evil. After their fall in WW1 all hell broke loose in the world. They were the dam keeping evil at bay

Most of that Islamic history is not known to me. Often times when change happens it is not as organic as it might be perceived in history books. Yes exactly, the crypto jews were called donme.
