Meh. I didn’t know anything in-depth before going to see it and I’m glad I was relatively ignorant. It seemed like a very well-done psychological suspense drama but not totally a horror movie. It lacked the action I thought would be there. I mean, without giving anything away, she did fulfill the trope of the female tripping and hurting herself (over couches 😫) so as to appear defenseless. \*yawn\* Anyway, the dining table scene kinda came out of nowhere and without understanding still life, etc, I couldn’t make heads or tails of the “villains.” So, it was kinda confusing but still a very stand-alone, entertaining film overall. I particularly enjoyed the first half but, again, I can’t decide whether her smirk (people keep calling it a smile) freaks me out. Did she want to stay? Did she want to become a part of that world and her conquering the pirate come from instinct alone? The end is disturbing to say the least and so I left feeling conflicted and sad. Not scared. Is that good?

For sure totally agree, also Clark's seemingly switch up from lost, victim in the backrooms to suddenly, a villain, confused me and they never really explained if it was clark or a mimic. That kinda frustrated me cos I feel like we missed some important context to understand his drastic character development. And totally agree, her tripping on the couch and seemingly becoming practically disabled as a result seemed a bit... On the nose as far as horror chases go. But I loved when she had to traverse that staircase that was suspended between the many floors of rooms, that scene made me dizzy, the idea of having to crawl out on a narrow stair case to a hatch in the ceiling reminded me of my fear of heights.. and I swear I've had similar dreams where I was struggling to climb up either a steep stair case,or a fire escape with no railings high above a city.

For sure, that abyss of rooms was one of if not *the* best scenes in the whole movie in terms of dread and symbolism. Liminal spaces are supposed to be about the unknown so it’s okay to have a lot of unanswered questions, in theory, and that’s what makes the discussion and analysis of the movie so great and engaging and I’m super impressed and excited that the director did it being only 20. He’s got more talent in his pinky finger than most these days. I’m really jazzed about a sequel. There are going to be many more movies, I’m sure and, hopefully, this is just an amuse bouche, if you will, wetting our palette for what should be even more lore to be introduced along the way. Through that lens, this movie is a total success. I just really, really wanted Mary to get out. Like Phil but not-not to be brainwashed by the company but to really get out.

Well... She may have. In my view the deformed version on Mary was the backrooms attempt at creating a version of her from memory (like the dog analogy mentioned throughout) which would maybe explain the other deformed humanoids in the backrooms, people who have been there and escaped. Besides it was left pretty open, with her asking what will happen to her and the interviewer/researcher stating that 'thats not up to him'. But I saw the ending as her being allowed to leave, and in her place a sort of mindless memory of her remained

Have you ever seen Annihilation? It reminded me of that (without seeing the web series, etc.). It’s like the entity that is the backrooms absorbs trauma and feeds off of it which expands it. So, while I appreciate your optimism and I hope future stories proves it true, one thing that is historically true about faceless corporations seeking to “understand” phenomena like this is that they can’t let someone leave. Phil gets to but his character seems like the kind of guy who is a really nice bootlicker. Mary, despite her quiet and unassuming demeanor, seems like the kind of female protagonist I’ve been waiting for to return to cinema since the OG Ellen Ripley. She could, imo, be the hero.

And no I haven't seen annihilation, is it streaming somewhere? Also I need to broaden my horizons, I realize I've seen a lot of the same movies multiple times (especially ones I like) but I rarely give anything new a try

I think it’s on MGM+ so you’re probably gonna have to take alternative measures…

That's a good point, and yeah I did get the sense that Phil knew her fate but didn't want to be the one to break it to her or seem responsible In anyway. But yeah he definitely is a bootlicker

And my other theory was that the backrooms is a construct of her mother's loss of sanity and basis in reality, which would explain the scene of her as a young girl and her mom telling her she can't look out the window. What if her mother's mental illnesses materialized a sort of false reality that a young Mary was forced to live inside of, and her home with the windows covered up was a room inside the backrooms. But her mother eventually was hospitalized, releasing Mary from her illness and the reality her illness created for her as a child. And maybe the return to the backrooms signifys Mary's own slip from reality, creating a physical construct that will trap everyone close to her inside of, explaining why clark was a victim of the reality, cos he was depending on her in a therapy since, and his reliance on her advice and beliefs created an opening into this alternate reality. Just an idea I came up with, probably wrong

I agree with you! Your insight is totally understandable and legit. I hope that they make more exploring this existential dread and expand on what was said at the table. To me, what really did Clark in was his admission (I won’t say it in case anyone reading hasn’t seen it). The dude liked it. He craved the power of being set free in this alternate state of consciousness. He finally got to do whatever he wanted to whoever he wanted. He let his dark side win. Mary didn’t.

This is hilarious. I had felt like I understood it, and had a theory that I liked totally and seemed to fit all the loose ends... And then I watched a backrooms explained video and thought that my explanation was far better then what this creator seemingly thought it meant... So I hope hes wrong

Yeah, I’ve been watching a lot of people talk about it. Jay Dyer just came out with his review today (pretty awesome philosophical discussion separate from the review the other day too)—watching it now. Especially with how hot this is, everyone has an opinion and they gotta jump on the YT movie review train; it’s hard to know who gets it and who doesn’t.

Yeah I'm gonna go see obsession this weekend cos it seems to be more open ended in terms of plot, and conflict, so I imagine I won't need to hear a hundred different takes of everyone who thinks they figured it out. And I just love horror movies and the fact that two highly anticipated horror films are both killing it in the theaters simultaneously is pretty awesome and I gotta go and support them. Also I liked the short horror films I've watched of curry baker on YouTube (the chair, milk & cereal) and he's clearly a talented young director

Yeah search them on YouTube, pretty sure he got his start making short films on YouTube, and some studio gave him a shot to make an actual movie, and he did so with a 700,000 dollar budget and has since its release far exceeded the cost in ticket sales, obsession and backrooms are both doing much better then the multi million dollar star wars film also in theaters, so definitely a win for independent amateur director debuts.
