Another suggestion if you haven't already thought of it: If you made up some arbitrary goals and some sort of "hi-score" so to speak, with a leader board or something - that might latch onto people's innate competitiveness. I'm not attempting to reduce your project to a mere game, just trying to help with engagement.

I was actually thinking gamification of a version of it. I was trying to think how two players or more could place organisms strategically to fight for territory.
