I've always wanted to fully learn Latin. Etymology is really fascinating and looking back through time via language and how it shapes us and we shape it.

I’m an etymology nerd too. Languages are great. Do you speak any other than English? Like goyim, I’ve tried to learn a few but nothing has stuck…I can sometimes remember a little. If you don’t use it, ya lose it. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/brain-wires-native-language-neurons

No I am a retarded person. I wish, it is a bucket list goal to learn at least enough to go to Korea or Japan on an extended vacation and at least be able to communicate.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. We’ve all got a little retard in us. For me, I’d love to learn Japanese. Heck, one of my life goals is to travel and just take immersive language classes everywhere. Spend 6 months from place to place. A girl can dream.

Me too! My best friend is from Peru. I spent a summer in Spain and was almost fluent. Now…I can’t even understand Spanglish half the time.

To be honest the Rosseta Stone one is probably the best... but it costs. They do a free try I'm sure, or at least they did.

I tried rosetta stone way back in the day like 15+ years ago, it was solid, never gave enough effort to learn, or always got distracted by youth. I also hear the best way is just to learn some basics, like a handful of sentences and words. Learn the phrasing structure and flow/masculine/femine and then just jump in and travel. They say you learn the most when you're surrounded by the language and the culture.

Yeah, the others are weaker imitations I'd say... I keep picking it up and putting it down myself, but I've learnt some, not a lot of Spanish, maybe forgotten it now though.... Yeah, I feel what you're saying, however for me locals generally go at a speed, where I'm like, what the fuck was that gobbledegook... So I like the format of those apps.

I know a little french and german from my years as a schoolboy. Lol otherwise i tried to learn portugese because im portugese (second generation, I'm really american with a portugese last name and a grandfather who spoke it but mostly spoke english) and I began dating a brazilian portugese girl and her parents were like immigrants andthough she grew up here she grew up speaking both English and portugese so i thought it would of helped me wity the parents and made my portugese ancestry more impressive if i knew how to speak it (even if very little) but i didnt succeed any, at least anything impressive, and the relationship was short lived so it was whatever. But it was at least motivation.

I know it’s probably stupid but after so many years of Spanish, I have such a hard time with Portuguese. It’s so beautiful though. One of my favorite things is to watch Iron Chef Brasil—of course, it’s scripted and all, but they make the culture look so fun and unique. My ancestors are German. I watch all of the international versions of Nailed It! and listening to the German makes me wanna go visit. During Christmas. Have you ever been to Portugal? You said before that you even learned some French. Why? I’ve been trying to learn that on Duolingo too (\*ahem\*, excuse me, Mystery Language Owl). Learning German and French now is just an excuse to be a bigger snob so I can read Heidegger and Sartre in their native languages. 🥸

Yea I have been told that most people who speak Spanish either can understand portugese or at least can get the hang of it pretty quick. I recently had tried to learn spanish because for a job I was applying for it would of been beneficial to know. So I began taking lessons on doulingo. I ended up getting a different job and stopped taking the lessons. But it still would be useful to know because it's every where. So many people speak it, I'd like to know what they're saying when they think I don't understand, because it always strikes me as secretive when they speak in Spanish randomly when they speak English most the time and suddenly begin speaking Spanish together. So I just want to know if I'm being talked about in secret. But yeah when I was younger one of my friends self taught himself German cos he was obsessed with rammstien. Also he was german so he liked the culture and language. But I guess the experience of teaching himself a foreign language was such a positive one he then picked up French then Japanesecos he ljked anime, and before long he knew like 8 languages fluently. But now he works in some field as a linguist (I don't speak to him much but I know that's what he ended up doing and goingcto school for and it's a really high paying job as well as his dream job.)

“…*before you assiduously malign the veracity of my etymological prowess*,” he said, eyes gleaming like someone who’d swallowed a thesaurus and found it delicious. His words hung in the air — ornate, overbuilt, absurdly precise. A linguistic cathedral in a room full of cardboard huts. People blinked, unsure whether to clap or cough. Language, to him, wasn’t a tool; it was a battlefield, and every syllable was a soldier. I wanted to laugh, but part of me admired the conviction, the audacity of believing words still mattered that much — that truth could be sculpted from syllables and armor forged from roots.
