We refer to the tafseer of Ibn Kathir or any other scholar not because they are pious saints, but because they are scholars of Islam who have devoted majority, if not all, of their lives in scrutinizing hadiths to explain the verses of Quran which require context and add on understanding through the narrations of the Prophet (SAW). Tafseers are not a collection of personal beliefs of a scholar, as what you are hinting at; rather they are explanations, interpretations, and commentaries of the Quran, used to explain it's linguistic, legal, theological, and historical aspects so that its meanings can be properly understood and applied. They rely heavily on authentic hadiths, the Quran itself and statements of the sahaba & tabi’een. Complete rejection of tafseers & hadiths is what results in deviant beliefs because then everyone will rely on their own interpretation which fits their own perspective disregarding the truth. Things become slightly different if you yourself are a scholar who has the ability to research academic sources, but for other everyday muslims, we rely on tafseers to understand the meaning of Quranic verses.

Let's not outsource our knowledge of Islam to anyone, and be actively engaged in research and discussion. Thinking Muslims, Reflecting Muslims, Deliberating Muslims etc.
