Just occurred to me so wanted to give you an example from islam as well, where clerics fucked up really bad So islam is very clear that you can't attack people who are not attacking you or oppressing you. It's also very clear that you can't kill an innocent person, not even in war. Deliberate collateral damage is not allowed. In the 6th century a common strategy used to be to poison the water sources and setting ingredients fire to crops and trees in order to break down the fort defenses. Hadith specify that you're not even allowed to burn trees or poison water sources. The famous sword verse about killing disbelievers was in a specific context of a particular conflict in which disbelievers had been attacking muslims to stop them from pilgrimage and they had killed many innocents. Even then, the sword verse gave a grace period of months and even after that Muslims were to spare anyone who said they repented. And yet, after 911, a few idiot, uncivilized "muslim" clerics said it was OK to attack civilians because USA/NATO had killed millions of muslims. Despite the fact that 90% of muslims around the world disagreed with such a ridiculous decree and opposed the very terrorists they were beimg associated with by the legacy media, there were plenty of uneducated, easy to manipulate kids who hadn't read or understood the Quran, who fell for this false narrative. And that was the birth of modern "Islamic fundamentalists". The most frustrating part was that years later, it was discovered that some of these clerics were genuinely misguided idiots, but some of them had recieved funding and/or training from foreign countries for years.
