Yeah, they do. I love words. They fill up my mind and my reality non-stop. That's kind of my point. I study linguistics, etymology, the English language in particular. The words are essential for me to understand myself, the world, and my relationship to others in the world. However, I rely on them far too much. Hughes presents the case (as has been made throughout linguistics studies for a very long time) that in a culture without a word for a certain thing, the mind forms in a different way. Words inform everything top to bottom and tell us who we are, how we ought to live, how we ought to *be.* Cultures are formed through a shared understanding of the world and much of that is achieved through a shared language but if that language differs from another, those two people groups can't relate, can't share, literally can't understand each other. So, my entire point (and I think Hughes' point) is that there are things in life that ought to matter more than words.
