Donald Trump figured the war with Iran would take four or five weeks. Seven and a half months later, the Navy is painting victory marks on its ships while Iran is still firing missiles and drones. And drones and missiles don't need to live to tell the tale. They don't even need a ride home. That's kind of the point.

Appreciate the perspective. I think it's relatively shallow (don't know how else to describe it in a respectful manner) Do NOT take the words Trump says as anything other than noises being generated for some arcane reason that doesn't strictly speaking relate to communication. Trump's rational in speaking is closer to generating reality than describing reality. The goal behind the move is what's important, not the price paid to make the move work. The cost of moving oil has become higher, but the quantity of oil being moved is HIGHER than it was when this started. And the move of insurance companies to exert control over the situation is broken. These people have been exerting control over international shipping and therefor international relations for something like 125 years. And that's what's been broken. Donald Trump figured (maybe) that these players would see he was serious and give up in a few weeks. But, he really didn't care how long it took. Stop and think about how "history" changes a few decades after events and realize we don't have any real clue what's going on today. And, yes, I'm aware of the irony of me claiming to have some inside track while claiming "we" don't really know what's going on.

And if we can't trust anything Trump says, and every outcome is supposedly part of some brilliant plan we don't understand, who's to say he didn't personally order the elementary school bombing to break the maritime insurance industry's stranglehold? There's absolutely no evidence of that, of course. But apparently we shouldn't expect evidence, believe his words or question the results. We just have to wait a few decades for history to reveal his genius. Pee-wee Herman fell off his bike and said, "I meant to do that." Trump drove a war into a ditch, and his defenders are insisting the ditch was the strategic objective all along.
