Engineered obsolescence is manufacturing standard. It goes back to the light-bulb mafia. The biggest rule of business is to increase profit by creating a need for return customers as well as expanding the customer base. Manufacturers focus on the return purchases, whereas health/pharma on the expanding customer base.
