''I've had a couple pit bulls, and have been around many over my life.'' If one wanted a pitbull looking dog, but not like pitbull, one could get an American Bulldog; they look like taller, version of pitbulls, but far more stable than pits. I had one, and she was absolutely the gentlest dog I've come ever across! She was very friendly, to both dogs, and people, and so docile that when she was trying to eat something from the street that she wasn't supposed to eat, I took that from her mouth! She didn't refuse or got aggressive at all. Many 'safe' breeds would have gotten aggressive (like my Maltese a long time ago), but not this American bulldog. American bulldogs overall are very gentle breed, and when they are about to attack a person, he/she would get a plenty of warning from them before. Not with pitbulls; that's what makes them so dangerous. Many times, they will approach with no warning, sometimes, even displaying playful signs, and then right in your face, will lunge for your throat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtOnP0LBwoQ ''The most recent one we had was forced on us by someone that abandoned it at about 3 months old.'' Maybe there was a good reason to abandon the dog at 3 months? ''It had been abused, and had been bullied by another dog.'' This is often the lame excuses doggie crazies uses to defend a garbage dog. I know many dogs that had been abused but never turned aggressive; I also know many aggressive dogs that had never been abused. I've done enough research on this ''Abuse makes dog aggressive'' excuses; it doesn't hold up. All the dogs that were documented to have been severely abused by the dog owners, never became aggressive, but instead all were very timid, afraid of humans. All the aggressive dogs that severely mauled their owners had never been abused but raised with love and kindness! In ROK, several dosa dogs were rescued from a dog farm; all were afraid of humans, except one, that was neither aggressive nor timid toward humans, but playful. Some of these dogs were adopted by and most of these once timid dogs never became aggressive, but that one dog that was neither aggressive nor timid got adopted by a loving couple, and became progressively more and more aggressive, and eventually had to be put down. So, abuse was not the issue, but the initial genetics of an individual dog, and not teaching that dog who was the master became the issue. Back in the day, any dog that showed aggression was killed, not they are allowed to breed that aggressive genes into the next generation. These 'pitbull epidemics' did not begin till 80s after the doggie crazies brainwashed the public the 'inhumanity' of 'culling' the aggressive dogs, and emphasizing 'positive' reinforcement training. I ask these 'positive' reinforcement advocates how they would train already an aggressive dog with 'positive' reinforcement to become nice dogs. No answer from them. Only thing that works on aggressive dogs is severe 'negative' reinforcement. Any time a doggie becomes aggressive, the dog should be administered a severe painful punishment. Eventually, doggie will get it. ''It takes a special person, and a special environment for that type of dog to thrive and make it safely.'' Why should/would a sane person waist his/her resources on these worthless, garbage dogs? This is the reason why I believe these pitbulls will become the single most dangerous threat to individual preppers after the implosion. https://soj.ooo/p/freethinkers/post/5d74c6b7bdc2e0be95dedfd92754d0d3 https://www.dogsbite.org/dangerous-dogs-pit-bull-owners.php#liontamer

You are clearly far more of a dog whisper than I am. I am just a dude that has had some dogs. I went to school to train personal protection dogs, but I still am not an "expert". I worry all the time about my own dogs running up on someone that might be looking for a reason to kill something. They are good dogs, not pitbulls, but sometimes accidents happen - they can slip a leash, or see something and take off. I live in a very rural area, and will probably always live somewhere far out like this to avoid accidents with people. Crazy or not, if someone shot my dog, it would end my life too because there would be revenge. Rational? Doesn't matter. I am strongly convicted too.

I walk mine off the leash. Makes it easy for them not to be aggressive, dogs in general are social creatures. "It would end my life too because there would be revenge" What are you implying? You would go kill a person for shooting your dog? What if its justified? Seems a bit extreme to possibly go to jail for your entire life because of a dog. Have you been in jail? It sucks...maybe you should do a short trip so you understand. Not being funny in saying that, it was an eye opening experience.

The goal is to never have to worry about it, responsibly stewarding the dogs that depend on me. I'd rather not dwell on what could happen if there is a mistake by me or someone else. The best thing is to stay away from people. I like this isolation.
