I do believe there is a resurgence of hip-hop with substance. Kendrick Lamar has been spearheading it for years now, and I think a lot of the up and coming artist are taking notice. Staying "independent" seems to be the only way you can stay true to yourself and your craft, but everyone needs money unfortunately. In the black community, you dangle a carrot in the face of starving boy, they're going to sign their name on that dotted line. Then the cycle continues. It kinda happened to another one of my favorite artist, Logic. I hate the narrative it paints of my people. I know we are a lot stronger than that, but we are all bonded by trauma. That's what people are hearing in the music. Deep down into the bones, so it will make you move, but what is the artist truly saying? The messages has been lost for a while now.
