When I was at community college I would sneak onto the Lewis and Clark campus, ninja my way to the back of their department and post up to study. Our library would close at 6, but I could get out of my house and be next to nature for hours reading. One night I went to take a leak in the bushes, and I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. Literally faster than I have ever reacted before, I was 5 feet back against the wall. The movement of the garter snake did awaken some ancient memory in me, and that's the only time I've ever jumped like that. I think there may be something to Sagan's idea. That being said, there are other explanations. Even in uncivilized people the symbolic mind is highly developed. Whether it be crocodiles that swim like snakes, monitor lizards that are snakelike, or actual snakes, people have used the snake/lizard as a symbol for plenty of reasons, it wouldn't be a stretch if someone just said "man it would suck if they could fly", and then his buddy says "yeah dude, what if SPIT FIRE?". And then dragons were born. A dragon is a cooler, mythical symbol than a regular snake, it may stretch back to antedeluvian times. People may have been rehashing it for ages because it's cool and vivid enough it can enter dreams, like mermaids and unicorns. OR it could've been an antedeluvian science project gone wrong and we have memories or something very real that never existed in numbers large enough to fossilize. It could've also been an exaggeration of the giant new zealand eagle that may have hunted islanders.
