Good point, it predates Islam and one of the principal feuds between early Muslims and the Quraichis (dominant tribe on Mecca) was the status of the slaves.   
These hatiths clearly pissed them off at that time:  
لا فضلَ لعربيٍّ على عجميٍّ ، ولا لعجميٍّ على عربيٍّ ، ولا لأبيضَ على أسودَ ، ولا لأسودَ على أبيضَ - : إلَّا بالتَّقوَى ، النَّاسُ من آدمَ ، وآدمُ من ترابٍ  
"No Arab is superior to a non-Arab, nor is a non-Arab superior to an Arab. No white is superior to black, nor is black superior to white—except by piety. All people are descendants of Adam, and Adam was created from dust."  
And This one:  
"O people! Your Lord is one. Indeed, there is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for a non-Arab over an Arab; neither for a red-skinned over a black-skinned, nor for a black-skinned over a red-skinned—except by righteousness. Verily, the most noble among you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous."  
  
The prophet goes even farther into refusing discrimination by family lineage, you know...those who say you know who I am? or You know is is my father? You know who is my family? as a threat to anyone challenging them.  
"Let those who boast of their forefathers—who are now dead—desist, for they are nothing but fuel for Hellfire. Otherwise, they will be more insignificant to Allah than the beetle that rolls dung with its nose. Indeed, Allah has stripped you of the arrogance of ignorance and its pride in ancestry. There is only a pious believer and a wicked sinner. All people are children of Adam, and Adam was created from dust."

The Quran takes a more general approach into addressing the issue. It doesn't look at it from a race perspective per say, it looks at all humans as one core divided by people's traditions and tribes and the only way God is going to sperate us is by righteousness:  
  
"O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted." Al-Hujurat 49:13
