They collect taxes to control the supply of money and to "control" inflation. Along with changing interest rates and selling bonds. They don't actually use taxes to pay for anything, it just goes to the interest rate on the gov debt. That's why it's cringe when people talk about their "tax dollars" paying for whatever

It begs the question: how were we a prosperous country before income tax even existed? Apparently they're not even needed...

Prior to income taxes, which were initially only imposed on the wealthiest individuals, the federal government was funded by tariffs and was also much smaller
