The cultural norms argument is irrelevant, because we're talking about a direct attack from one people onto another group of people (nation). Consider the Opium Wars. What do cultural norms have to do with foreigners destroying the Chinese nation with drugs? Or Zionists fleeing to Israel for raping foreign children? We aren't talking equal opportunity criminals--they are not targeting themselves. No, the sports analogy falls apart on too many levels. In fact, it makes light of the situation we're in. Where is the agreed upon set of rules? There are none. Imagine you're watching a football game and one team bribes the ref, plays with extra players on the field, rapes and drugs the other team's kids and troons them out... It's a bad analogy and it makes me suspicious of anyone who would seriously use it.

I respectfully disagree because the sports analogy vs. the Opium Wars takes into account completely different perspectives. To me the sports analogy works because it assumes that two (or more) opposing teams are coming together and competing to see who is best based on an established set of "norms." This is the common portrayal of cooperative nations. Now, what you are supposing through the Opium Wars - and I am not saying that you are wrong - is that one side is coming to the field with rather sinister intent. This may very well be the case. The problem is that the other team (non-sinister one, i.e. us) is still pretending that this is not the case and is getting their ass handed to them. Look at the headlines of any liberal OR conservative media or even politician here in MAGA country. Every one of them will tell you that there is no situation regarding this subject. Everything is on the up and up. Therefore, what I am saying is that the home team better get smart and realize that the other team is doing exactly what you suggested (in my sports analogy. 😊) They are bribing refs, playing with extra players on the field, etc. and our own coaches and officials, etc. aren't saying a damn thing. So your Opium Wars analogy can be used, but only if our side recognizes that it's war. Right now are we not even doing that; our Team Captain is telling us that we're winning when the score is 1948 to 0.

Well I'd certainly agree that the people ostensibly on our side aren't doing much, and losing with dignity is still losing.
