While I wouldn't want to live in Russia or China, I do believe the American media has demonized both countries to an unreasonable level. I don't think either country is really a threat to the US or "our way of life". One reason China may be seen as a "threat" is because of its growing economic power, which could translate to greater geopolitical and military power. That would be a "threat" to US hegemony.
