"Turning the other cheek" wasn't about being weak; it was an act of resistance. In that era, a backhanded slap to the right cheek was a demeaning way for a superior (like a Roman soldier) to insult an inferior. By presenting your left cheek, you forced the slapper into a dilemma: either hit you with an open hand, which was how equals hit each other, or use their "unclean" left hand. This subtle act shifted the shame back onto the aggressor, exposing their cruelty and forcing them to acknowledge your dignity.
