What caused you to wake up?

I suddenly realized that I didn't know why the Nazis did all those horrible things that I was taught about in school. We were always just told that they happened. The nazis woke up and chose violence? Why? I was never told. So I did research into events prior to 1930s Germany. I learned about the Weimar Republic and Magnus Hirschfeld and the debauchery of Berlin. I learned just what kind of books the Nazis were burning. I'll tell you what, it sure as heck wasn't Aristotle and Shakespeare.
