The verse catholics use to justify the papacy is "I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church; and the powers of death shall not prevail against it" and then use that to that Peter's successors were infallible and divinely ordained. Fact is Jesus never explicitly sanctioned one hierarchical church with an exclusive domain on interpretation. Many times popes were simply appointed based on the political whims of the emperors. I apologize if my understanding is wrong. I'm simply quoting historical facts. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
