It's not for our benefit. Until now the foreign powers in foreign lands have known kidnapping an American abroad is to invite the gods of hell to play "Holy shit, I'm dead!" in their realms. Until now, they have known that becoming an active player within the US in these games meant indefinite detainment and eventual release at some point. Now they know, and more importantly, their puppets know that they're now playing "Holy shit, I'm dead!" even inside the US proper. I'm not going to watch one way or another. But, they will. And I don't care if he's taken apart with a weedwhacker, burned to death over several weeks or whatever inventively tortuous method is conceived to make the point: "Fuck with us and die screaming... or wishing you could... die... or scream." It's not for our benefit. It's for theirs.
