In my opinion, especially post-scarcity, yes, people can do the right thing without a financial incentive or penalty but right now, no. I found what I think is a particularly interesting article about a [billionaire who argues that society should be free of money](https://capitalismmagazine.com/2022/01/is-a-society-without-money-possible-or-desirable/) but money has allowed him the freedom to believe that a society without money would reduce scarcity, war, and crime (which I don't believe). The article is pro-capitalist (based on Ayn Rand whom I dislike greatly) but the arguments contained therein can be refuted. Anyway, unlike Maezawa, I think that "money" is a very loose term and regardless of political ideology, currency of some sort, commodities, etc. will always take precedent over doing the "right thing" but I can envision a potential society that doesn't allow production and the profits from production to be the guiding principle upon which the whole society functions. So, to answer your question "money," for me, can be anything that is exchanged for something else. As a person with needs and wants, if I want fruit and I have an apple and you have an orange, an apple and an orange are money. "Money" is leverage. Bargaining power. It's not a bad thing but it usually is, based on the social organization, because those with money abuse the power that comes with it and those without money commit crime, etc. because they can't accept not having the power that money creates. For me, either way, money is too often used as a weapon. So, the question for me isn't about a society without money but a society that can sustain long-term non-violence.
