God and Jesus are not the same Person, but they share the same divine Being. God is one divine essence (ousia) existing eternally as three distinct Persons (hypostases): the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit.  The First Council of Nicaea (325 AD) did not compile, rewrite, or alter the books of the Bible. Its primary purpose was to address the Arian heresy (which claimed Jesus was a created being, not fully God). The biblical canon was formalized much later through local and ecumenical councils, checking texts against what the earliest apostolic communities had already been practicing for centuries. • Orthodoxy does not view the Bible as Islam views the Quran—as a book dropped perfectly from heaven that cannot tolerate a single human scribe's variant. The Bible is a product of the Church. Humans wrote it, humans copied it, and humans compiled it under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. • Because humans copied manuscripts, textual variants exist. The Orthodox Christian does not base their faith on the flawless preservation of paper, but on the living, continuous Tradition of the Church—the community that has preserved the dynamic, experiential relationship with God from the Apostles down to the present day.

You ask how anyone can know enough about God to judge another. In Orthodoxy, no human has the right to judge another, as judgment belongs solely to God. Furthermore, Orthodoxy explicitly states that God's inner essence (ousia) is completely unknowable and beyond human comprehension.

However, we can truly know God through His divine energies. Think of the sun: you cannot travel into the sun or touch its core without being consumed (its essence), but you can truly look at its light, feel its warmth, and be sustained by it (its energies).

The Orthodox Christian believes the Bible not because they have solved a historical puzzle, but because the "light and warmth" (the divine energies) described in the text match the living spiritual reality they experience in prayer, the sacraments, and the liturgical life of the Church. Hope is not built on an ancient book alone, but on a living person—Jesus Christ—who is experienced here and now.  If the universe is merely a chaotic, accidental collision of atoms, then human thoughts are just chemical reactions. If your brain is just a byproduct of random chance, you have no logical basis to trust your own skepticism, your own reason, or your own conclusion that the Bible has been changed. • For words like "truth," "change," "corruption," and "judgment" to have any objective meaning, there must be an absolute, unchanging, and rational source of intelligibility behind reality. Eastern Orthodox theology calls this source the Logos (the divine Reason/Word of God). We can know truth only because our minds are made in the image of an absolute Truth.

Well, to arrive at the true Church, we must first understand the fundamental questions that make such a conclusion possible. We need ontology to understand what exists and the nature of being; epistemology to understand how we know what is true and how we distinguish truth from error; metaphysics to examine the ultimate foundations of reality; logic to test the consistency of our reasoning; theology to understand the nature of God and divine revelation; hermeneutics to interpret Scripture and Tradition correctly; ecclesiology to understand the nature, identity, and authority of the Church; and historiography to examine how the Church has developed and preserved its teachings throughout history.

We must also understand anthropology, the nature of the human person; ethics, the relationship between truth and moral life; and patristics, the writings and teachings of the Church Fathers.

Only by bringing these disciplines into dialogue can we rigorously examine the claims of different churches, evaluate their foundations, and determine which, if any, possesses the fullness of truth. The question is not simply which Church feels right to us, but which Church is true, why it is true, and how we can know it is true. The key disciplines, more precisely, are:

Ontology — What is being? What does it mean for something to be real?

Epistemology — What is knowledge, and how can we know that a claim is true?

Metaphysics — What are the ultimate principles and foundations of reality?

Logic — Are our arguments valid, consistent, and free from contradiction?

Philosophy of religion — What can reason establish about God, revelation, and religious truth?

Theology — What has God revealed, and what can be known about Him?

Ecclesiology — What is the Church, and what constitutes its identity and authority?

Hermeneutics — How should Scripture and Tradition be interpreted?

Biblical studies — What do the biblical texts mean in their historical, literary, and theological contexts?

Patristics — What did the Church Fathers teach, and how did they understand apostolic faith?

Church history — How did Christian doctrine, institutions, and ecclesial divisions develop?

Historiography — How do we evaluate historical evidence and competing accounts of the past?

Philosophical and dogmatic theology — How are Christian doctrines formulated, related, and tested for internal coherence?

Christian anthropology — What is the human person, and what is humanity's relationship with God?

Ethics and moral theology — What are the implications of religious truth for how we live?

Comparative theology and comparative religion — How do different religious traditions understand their own claims and those of others?

Sociology and psychology of religion — How do social structures, group identity, and psychological biases influence religious belief? These disciplines help us identify possible distortions, though they cannot independently establish or disprove divine truth.

Philosophy of language — How do words, concepts, definitions, and propositions convey truth, especially when discussing God and theological mysteries?

One important distinction: knowing these disciplines is not the same as proving which Church is true. They provide the tools for investigating that question. Within Orthodox Christianity, the inquiry would also involve apostolic succession, sacramental continuity, the reception of the ecumenical councils, Holy Tradition, and the continuity of the Church's faith and worship.

The deepest question underlying the entire investigation is epistemological: By what criteria can we recognize the true Church without simply assuming that the Church we already believe in is the true one?
