Tell your mother I appreciate her.

Not just for feeling bad, but for being willing to admit she made a mistake. That matters. Most parents would rather defend the decision forever than say, “I didn’t know. I trusted the wrong people.”

And honestly, that is what happened. She was handed bad advice by the medical system. Probably more than advice. In a lot of hospitals, it was treated like routine processing, not a real moral decision.

In my case, I was born in a hospital and they didn’t even ask my parents if they wanted me circumcised. They just did it, which is especially weird because my father wasn’t circumcised.

That is the part people miss. A lot of this was not thoughtful religious conviction. It was obedience to custom, doctors, paperwork, authority and inherited rules people stopped questioning.

Another thing that makes me skeptical is that circumcision wasn’t just required for willing adult followers. It was also imposed on children and on slaves. That doesn’t look like a personal covenant between an individual and God. It looks more like a tribal or social marker enforced by whoever held authority. The fact that infants and slaves were included makes it harder for me to see it as a matter of personal faith or consent.

To me, circumcision in the Bible feels less like proof that it came from God and more like evidence that it came from men. Humans have an amazing ability to call something sacred after it has already become routine.
