**Cost of the Iran War to the United States**
**Updated October 30, 2026**

The Pentagon estimates the war with Iran has cost the United States **$47.1 billion in military expenditures and replacement costs** through October 16, 2026.

However, that figure does not represent the full cost of American military assistance to Israel, economic disruption, infrastructure damage or long-term obligations.

The war began February 28, 2026, under Operation Epic Fury.

**U.S. Military Costs**

| Date | Estimated Cost |
|---|---:|
| April 2026 | $25 billion |
| May 2026 | $29 billion |
| July 2026 | $37.5 billion |
| September 2026 | $43.6 billion |
| October 16, 2026 | $47.1 billion |

**Breakdown of Military Spending**

- **$29 billion:** Replacing missiles, bombs and other munitions.
- **$11.9 billion:** Military operations, personnel support and logistics.
- **$6.1 billion:** Replacing destroyed or lost military equipment.

Approximately 62% of the estimated military cost involves replacing expended weapons.

The $29 billion replacement estimate includes weapons fired by American forces defending Israel, but it does not establish the full value of weapons transferred to Israeli forces.

**American Military Assistance to Israel**

The United States provides Israel approximately $3.8 billion annually under its longstanding military assistance agreement.

For fiscal 2026:

- **$3.3 billion:** Foreign Military Financing grants that Israel can use to purchase American weapons and military equipment.
- **$500 million:** Joint missile-defense programs, including Iron Dome and other systems.
- **$202 million:** Additional cooperative defense programs outside the regular assistance agreement.

**Total: Approximately $4 billion in fiscal 2026 military assistance and cooperative defense funding.**

These programs existed before the Iran war, so their full cost cannot be attributed exclusively to the conflict.

**Additional Weapons for Israel**

In March 2026, the Trump administration expedited approximately $650 million in arms sales involving more than 20,000 bombs.

An additional $298 million in direct commercial munitions sales was reported.

In September, the administration proposed another $2.8 billion weapons package involving approximately 40,000 heavy bombs.

Most of that proposed package was to be financed through American Foreign Military Financing, meaning U.S. taxpayers would fund Israel's purchases.

However, these transactions cannot simply be added to the annual military assistance total.

Some sales use previously appropriated American aid, while others involve Israeli payments. Proposed sales also do not necessarily represent completed deliveries or expenditures.

The precise additional taxpayer cost of wartime weapons transfers to Israel has not been publicly established.

**American Missile Defense of Israel**

The United States has also expended substantial quantities of expensive missile-defense interceptors defending Israel against Iranian attacks.

Reported expenditures include:

- More than 200 THAAD interceptors during the initial fighting.
- More than 100 ship-launched SM-3 and SM-6 interceptors during the initial fighting.
- Additional Patriot and other interceptors throughout the conflict.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that replacing missile-defense interceptors expended through August 1 would cost approximately $13.1 billion.

That figure includes interceptors used in the wider conflict, not exclusively those defending Israel.

These replacement costs are already represented in the Pentagon's broader military estimate and must not be counted twice.

**Estimated Combined Military and Assistance Costs**

| Category | Amount |
|---|---:|
| Pentagon war-cost estimate | $47.1 billion |
| FY2026 military assistance and cooperative defense funding for Israel | $4.0 billion |
| Combined accounting estimate | $51.1 billion |

**Approximately $51.1 billion** is a reasonable accounting estimate when combining the Pentagon's reported war costs with fiscal 2026 American military assistance to Israel.

However, it is not an independently verified estimate of spending caused exclusively by the Iran war.

Some Israeli assistance was already planned before February 28, and the precise costs of additional wartime transfers remain unknown.

**Economic Costs to Americans**

According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, as of October 29, 2026:

- **$125.5 billion:** Estimated additional gasoline and diesel expenses nationwide.
- **$938:** Average additional direct and indirect motor-fuel expenses per American household.

These costs affect drivers, businesses, agriculture, transportation and government operations.

They are separate economic estimates, not additional Pentagon appropriations.

**Additional Costs Not Fully Accounted For**

- Rebuilding American military installations damaged by Iranian attacks.
- Long-term medical treatment and disability benefits for wounded veterans.
- Additional weapons transfers and assistance to Israel not captured in published figures.
- Interest on additional federal borrowing.
- Economic losses from disrupted international shipping and trade.
- Depletion of American missile-defense inventories.
- Higher food, heating, transportation and other consumer prices.

The Congressional Budget Office has acknowledged that it could not reliably estimate the additional foreign-aid and diplomatic costs associated with the conflict.

**Human Cost**

As of October 28, 2026:

- **21 American service members killed.**
- **More than 850 American service members wounded.**

**Bottom Line**

**$47.1 billion:** Pentagon estimate of direct military costs and replacement requirements.

**Approximately $4 billion:** Fiscal 2026 American military assistance and cooperative defense funding for Israel.

**Approximately $51.1 billion:** Combined military and Israeli-assistance accounting estimate, including some spending that predates the war.

**$125.5 billion:** Estimated additional gasoline and diesel costs across the American economy.

These figures cannot all be added together to produce a verified total war cost because they cover different periods, contain some overlapping expenditures and include spending that would have occurred without the war.

The total additional cost caused by the conflict remains unknown.

**The central problem is that the Pentagon's $47.1 billion estimate does not provide a complete accounting of the economic and financial consequences of the war, including the additional costs associated with supporting Israel.**
