If you stick with just chickens, even a flock size of 20 or so will be easy to keep things sanitary. One advantage having only chickens is you can keep the water inside the coop which helps with the freezing issue. Things like this always seem more complicated before you actually do them, then you realize it's not so bad. It's also a lot of fun. Chickens are amazing animals. Like us they have their own routines and friends.

Yeah I'm excited about it. Just want to be prepared, I don't want to hurt anyone or any creatures 🐔Also have been looking into pigs. They seem like a bit more to handle though. Friend of mine does them off and on and he quit cause they just get too big and unruly to deal with. I am also just contemplating how to design my coop so make sure the eggs dont freeze in winter, not sure if eggs should freeze? lot of the coops I see have the spots for the eggs to be collected from the outside of the coop so you don't have to go inside to collect eggs. But I feel like without proper insulation that style could end up freezing all winter. Like if the egg laying part sticks out too far from the rest of the coop it could be difficult to keep heated....Sorry thinking outloud lol

Some areas get colder than mine. I've used some pre fab coops, but only for specific purposes and because I was able to get them at steep discounts. Otherwise I built my own. I never used external nest boxes because I was concerned with freezing too. I'll have some posts on coop designs. Chickens are pretty forgiving animals. They're not like bees where everything has to be just right.
