I'm sure I'll get slambasted for this, but "everything" is going as according to plan. How do you get 350 million people to go along with the plan? Well, first you pur someone in office who makes life much better for most citizens. Then after four years pull him out and put someone in who absolutely destroys the economy and does really stupid things to really pissoff most of the citizens. Then you bring back the one who had made life better four years ago, and the people will be so willing to get him back that they will do anything to not go back to the way it was. Trust me, I hope I'm wrong, but my last 20+ years of research tells me I'm not.
