Listening to the radio, whilst driving, I heard something interesting. Featured doctor was offering his insights from over 30 or 40 years of his practise. He questioned the common practice of bring a water bottle with you ever where you went, even midst his consultation with a patient. The doctor sighted an American study from early 1970's (I remember this detail as, I too, am from the early 1970's) in which "8 cups of water" was found to be the average requirement for the human body. The doctor believed this to be the modern, "1 litre a day" standard. His contention was that, thirst was the body's natural signal to drink and not something to be avoided at all costs. The most interesting part of his argument was that, if the early 1970's did start this craze, then the qualifying statement, found in same study has been ignored; Most of the 8 cups of water we need, is found in the food we eat.
