i would long board for more travel and leisure purposes, theyre much smoother and capable of riding on almost all terrain. but theyre really limited to what you can do as far as playing around and progressing in abilities, due to their heavy, bulk and awkward shape, you really ride it more like a surfboard, and could definetly get good at like carving and bombing hills, but if you dont live in san fransico where its all hills, you would be basically peak at riding it confidently. after that, theres not a whole lot you can learn or do to pass the time, where a skateboard is litterally a lifetime of learning, im sure youve heard the entirely false claim that 10,000 hours of learning something makes you a professional at said thing, and in some cases its definetly true, but you can spend your entire life skateboarding and never will be considered a professional by any standard. and the possibilities are endless, you can bomb hills and carve, like the long board, but also you can do manuals (basically wheelies but on skateboards) while you ride it and you overtime get better at balancing, and its just something you can do while riding, and its fun and challenging. then theres all these flatground, old school tricks you can learn that are impressive looking and satisfying to do. i kinda see them as circus tricks, like the juggaling equivalent of skating, or even at times like figure skating of skateboarding, cos some of them are just like stationary spinning on the board, and then theres ollies, which opens you up to endless possibilities, flip tricks, grabs. then you can learn vert or any transition, including walls or steep inclines, but transition alone is an entirely different skill in itself, like being good at anything prior to transition doesnt automatically mean youll be successful at transition, so you are constantly having to adapt and develop muscle memory depending on what you want to do when you skateboard. i can keep naming lists of things that you can do that long boards just cant do practically, like gaps, ledges, grinds, all these things are not necessary to do to skate, like i said you could skate just to get exercise and travel probably twice as far as youd be able to run while exerting half as much energy, but its more about having some form of transportation that doubles as a tool to passs the time if you happen to be bored with nothiing around but an empty parking lot and a skateboard, liike thats literally all you need for hours of fun and extremely intense excersize also cos youre activating a bunch of muscles and reactions you often dont do together, while balancing, then jumping, while shiftiing your weight and bending your knees, liike its a trip and you can get creatiive playing around on a skateboard, longboards to me always seem to be pretty quiickly boriing oh and i forgot to mention switch. learning to ride swiitch is an example of how far you can take skating, like youll never learn everything there is to do on one, much like a guitar, theres endless combinations of guitiar notes that no matter how many songs are played on guitar you can always find new variations of old tricks. but switch is just learning how to do everything with your less domiinant foot as your pushiing foot, so you change your stance from whstever is comfortable to you, to the oppisite of that, and basically begin to learn how to skate all over again cos thats what it is like to learn switch.

It's challenging, and could definitely be dangerous but as you start out, as long as you don't go trying anything unrealistic, the most that will happen is the board will slip out from under you until you get used to the balance, skateboarding actually helped me learn to fall safely. But for the most part he will get occasional skinned knees and elbows, just make sure he wears a helmet because your head is everything and you need to protect it. Otherwise I've been skateboarding since I was seven and found it to be a great escape and way to meet friends and like-minded individuals, especially if he's not the preppy, popular kid, there's an entire community of young active kids who find a network of other quiet, introverted, outcasts frankly, and they are all super welcoming and accepting, to this day when I go to the skate park and bring my kids I am almost impressed by how willing the other kids are of all ages to teach younger kids, or encourage them despite their skill set. There's something about the skateboard community that as long as you are willing to get on a board, no matter how terrible you may be once on it, it earns a kind of respect mutually among other skaters mostly because they remember how scary and intimidating it could be when they were also just learning. So theyre all ways wiling to compliment you, encourage you, and pick you up if you fall down while also asking if you are okay and being genuinely concerned. Otherwise, I think it's a great thing for kids to get into especially seeing how the only outdoor activity this generation seems to flock to are those e-bikes which honestly seems to attract a bad crowd, maybe not everywhere, but in my town There's a whole gang of middle school age punks who ride e-bikes around doing wheelies blocking traffic, flipping people off, and even one time pulling a man off his motorcycle and stomping on him while one of them stabbed him with some tiny blade, or screwdriver, resulting in only superficial wounds, but I rather encourage my kids to get outside and obsessively practice and progress at skateboarding, and finding a friend or two to go out with and skate opposed to allowing them to have a $3,000 ebike which is modeled to look like a dirt bike, and just become these masked, shiesty wearing, nike jump suit punks who litterally are intentionally going out and making the community hate them.
