I don't know much about Barney but since he has or had access to kids I expected a hidden dark side there somewhere

Let's learn about Israeli culture: TL;DR: Israeli media (and Israeli culture in general) often sounds shockingly blunt—even self-critical in ways that would get labeled antisemitic if said by outsiders—because of a cultural norm called dugri: straight-talking, no-BS communication seen as honest and efficient, not rude. This style comes from Israel's history: immigrant melting pot needing quick clarity, high-stakes environment (security, military service), and a "Sabra" ideal of being tough and direct. In-group criticism is like family arguing—harsh but accepted internally. The same words from outside sources lose that context and trigger red flags.Bottom line: What reads as brutal self-critique in Haaretz is often just Israelis being Israelis
