 One Nation, Not Many: Why It's Time to End Tribal Sovereignty and Unite America By: An American Citizen Who Believes in Truth Over Narrative \--- In the United States today, hundreds of "sovereign nations" operate within the borders of a single republic. These are not foreign embassies or international protectorates — they are tribal governments, maintained on reservation lands, operating with legal privileges and exemptions that no other citizen or community enjoys. While framed as justice for historical wrongs, this fragmented sovereignty has created a divided America — one in which \*\*some people live above the Constitution, shielded from accountability\*\*, while others are expected to carry the full burden of law, taxation, and civic responsibility. It’s time to tell the truth: this system no longer serves justice. It serves division. \--- 1. America Cannot Function with Divided Sovereignties A nation cannot survive with two (or two hundred) legal systems operating in conflict. Tribal courts, police forces, and criminal codes often operate \*\*outside the reach of state and federal law\*\*, creating legal blind spots where crime can flourish, and justice stalls. This isn't equality. It's fragmentation. As Theodore Roosevelt said, “There can be no divided allegiance here.” And yet, tribal sovereignty encourages exactly that — a divided legal and cultural identity within a supposedly united republic. \--- 2. Tribal Lands Have Become Safe Havens for Crime and Corruption Let’s speak plainly: \*\*cartels, traffickers, and criminal networks exploit reservation jurisdictions\*\* that limit state and federal oversight. Tribal governments are often opaque, clan-controlled, and plagued by mismanagement. The result? High rates of poverty, addiction, unemployment — and an endless stream of federal dollars that solve nothing. If tribal sovereignty is being used to shield crime, foster dependency, and block accountability, it is no longer a sacred trust. It’s a failing system. \--- 3. The Historical Narrative Has Been Sanitized We are told the land was stolen, that peaceful Native peoples were driven out by cruel settlers. But this narrative leaves out important truths: \- Native tribes warred with each other, took slaves, and conquered territory long before European settlers arrived. \- Land was not held in permanent moral stewardship — it was fought over, taken, and traded. To frame modern sovereignty as a moral debt for a fictional past is not truth — it’s selective storytelling. \--- 4\. Sovereignty Has Created Perpetual Dependency, Not Empowerment The reservation system has become a \*\*permanent welfare state\*\*, isolating Native people from the opportunities that come with full integration into American society. \- Billions in aid flow into tribal systems with little transparency or measurable success. \- Young people grow up under separate rule, often disconnected from national purpose. \- Tribal governments control resources and often silence dissent within their own people. If this is sovereignty, it's not liberation — it's stagnation. \--- 5\. One Nation Means One Law for All A citizen of the United States should be just that: a \*\*citizen\*\*, not a subject of a parallel system. \- No more legal enclaves \- No more tax-free zones \- No more dual systems of justice We must return to a unified American identity: one law, one standard, one people. \--- The Path Forward: Honor Culture, End Sovereignty This is not a call to erase Native identity. It’s a call to end a legal and political arrangement that keeps Native Americans \*\*separate, dependent, and manipulated\*\* by a system that serves elites — not the people. \- End federal recognition of tribal nations \- Convert reservations into counties or municipalities \- Extend full constitutional protection and legal parity \- Encourage cultural preservation \*\*within\*\* American unity, not against it America is not perfect — but it is the nation that offers liberty, equality, and opportunity for all. That promise must extend to Native peoples — not by isolating them, but by welcoming them fully into the rights, responsibilities, and future of this country. One nation, under God. Not many.
