They were CINOs, Christians in name only; they were motivated primarily, by petty revenge for what they had suffered under communists in NK. They were just looking out for punching bags to take out their anger. So they just accused anyone of being communists, so that they could kill them, and take their propery. One of their tricks of the trade was forcing the girls of the families with some property of their own to marry them or they would accuse of them being communists, and kill them. After marrying the girls, they would kill the family anyway, kill the girls as well, and inherit the property. This was the primary reason why so many people in Jeju turned against the government. The same, with bodo league massacres, the original plan was sound; to ferret out potential communists/collaborators in case of successful DPRK invasion and kill them before they could activate or turn. But some/many of the flunkies got overzealous, started competing with each other by how many prospective victims they could sign up, by giving them free bags of barly, to mostly then, illiterate poor people, who had no idea what they were signing on, admitting that they were potential communist collaborators, for a bag of barly. At least half of the victims were totally innocent people tricked/bribed into signing their own death sentence, by these flunkies. Religious people who are the most violent in ROK today are Christian fundamentalists; they make American fundamentalists look like saints. Some of my mother's ex-friends were these nutjobs. I know them in person. Fascists on the other hand were only after the true communists; they were never implicated on the massacres of innocent people.
