Kind of mysterious I'll admit, but having spent roughly thirty years in the realm of providing homes I don't feel like I can give you any reasonable answer for your question. I have the impression that prices for everything are anywhere from 2 to 20 times more expensive than they need to be, relative to wages, but I can't provide the slightest idea of what can actually be done about it. Here's what I "know" to be true. A LOT of people get paid a LOT to provide NO improvement to the human condition. Here's what I don't "know". All that money paid to people who aren't moving the ball forward is coming from our pockets, one way or another. It's been probably thirty years since I read an economist claiming that the federal government was at bare minimum 8 times as expensive as it needed to be. In the insane world of food production, I know someone losing money producing artisan bread for $15 a loaf while a company is making money producing equivalent bread for $4 a loaf and presumably making money off the venture. What I suspect is that if we were being paid the savings of not paying bunches of people not to work, paying bunches of other people incredible wages to have "jobs" that aren't productive, AND we experienced the savings of not paying for that same malfeasance driving up the cost of all our materials, we could produce homes well within the price range of anyone willing to really work. But, here's the problem with all of that: I don't really know.
