The YouTube channel "Full Metal Theist" does a fantastic break down about the age of Aisha. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH8L3XiVrXw Long story short, What we consider to be a child today is not what a child always was. Generally it was determined that a child came of age once they've hit puberty. There was no in between of being a teenager or a young adult. Throughout history, a lot of people married under the age 18. The age of 18 as the marker of adult hood is a new modern conception that is not even followed by western states themselves fully. Many European countries for example put the age of consent below 18. Usually in the 14-16 range. Another really important thing to consider that is that the average human lifespan at the time was 30-40. Meaning if you waited to be married until 18, you would not be getting your life started until half way through it. It is akin to not being married until you are in your 40s today. What is interesting is that you historically go back through books critiquing Islam and the prophet, you find that the argument of pedophilia wasn't present until the late 19th century. Which matches up because that is around the time that human life started to shift and people started to have different conceptions about what a child is.
