I was alive during the Rodney King riots, as an Asian American youth with black godfather. The local elderly black community saw the news in LA and did shifts to protect my folks restaurant. Local white reporters from Atlantic City Press came to interview Asian owned businesses in mostly black mainstreet in my Jersey town. As I recall, most of the families response to the shit in Los Angelos, was like: "we don't know WTF is wrong with Cali, but we're all getting along okay here." There was a lot more community sentiment and older WW2 generation folks back then... and as crack cocaine, genX culture, and gang activity came that community pretty much fell apart. Shoplifting was also handled pretty well by the older cops who knew the parents of punks. By the 2010s real police replaced by pothead out of town suburban punks that didn't know shit about the city or community they shared apartments to claim residency in (Police Dept good paying union job). Also, all of their daddies were police who helped them get the jobs.
