Yep I've done the whole slavery deep dive in arguments online countless times. What is the number like 4% at the highest amount of Americans owned a slave, 4% is what comes to mind off the top of my head without searching it out again. Not all slave owners being white might I add. The whole states rights thing I really appreciate. I believe states should have rights and the federal government should be limited. But I also think that road may have led to 50 states constantly fighting amongst each other as well. There is a strength to the Union. And Thats Why I love America, we have regional cultural differences and states like Europe has Countries. But we also have a strong union between the states, unlike the European union which seems like rubbish. Thats the America that I love. I'll also add I understand that the depiction of the Southern Accent associated with 'Stupidity' or 'Dumb Southerner' comes from the Hookworm. They were infected with Hookworm parasites and still are today in certain circumstances. Which sapped their life force and ability to be intelligent. As well as the teachings of Thomas Sowell: "Thomas Sowell, in his book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals," explores the origins of the "black ghetto" culture in the United States. According to Sowell, this culture did not originate from African roots but rather from the "dysfunctional white southern redneck culture" that was prominent in the antebellum South. This redneck culture, in turn, came from the "cracker culture" of Welsh, Highland Scots, Ulster Scots, and border English or "North Britons," who emigrated from the more lawless border regions of Britain in the eighteenth century. Sowell argues that this cultural transmission explains many of the behavioral and social patterns found in African-American communities in the urban North, which were heavily influenced by the migration of southern blacks during the Great Migration. His thesis challenges the conventional wisdom that attributes these patterns solely to the legacy of slavery and racial discrimination." The feelings of much of the Poor and uneducated in America where they are stuck in an endless victimhood cycle. Has very deep roots, probably even before the Poor Dumb Welsh/scots/britons arrived, where did they learn originally to accept being dumb as a good human attribute. Another great rabbit hole. I have seen this "School is lame" and being an egghead or nerd as a derogatory stance especially in Men of all colors and cultures, but it definitely affects the Black community the worst. It's also very difficult to change and lift people out of this victim loving welfare desiring modern enslavement mentality. Whereas you remain dumb and rely on the Government to provide for you instead of providing for yourself and your family. What is the real difference between being a slave in 1824, or being on welfare? Both get shitty healthcare, shitty education for their kids, shitty food, poor quality housing, a complete reliance and subservice to a "Master" or "Government". And this is why as a northerner I have sympathy for the plight of much of the Southern Rebels. I believe much of their cause to fight was just, which is why i don't think we should be tearing down confederate or union statues in this country.

Damnyankee. jk. (Turtledove) Interesting post about Sowell. I'm not very well read in his written works. And I totally agree about the **regional diversity** in the United States. It is unhealthy for a small region, or a single city, to dominate the politics, culture, and popular imagination, of a society/country.

%%HIGHLY RECOMMEND THOMAS SOWELL%% Especially that book. It's eye opening from all sides, white, black, northern, southern. I think he has the best perspective of any single person on the whole Black/White/ Slavery Situation in America past and present. theres a youtube channel Thoms sowell i'm not sure if it is his or a fanpage. But theres tons of great videos.
