Not taking away from your response, and I'll look this up if I have to. I've heard of half a dozen remedies, or maybe a remedy half a dozen times. Burning's simple and solves the long chain molecule breakdown problem in the simplest way possible. My gut sense is that even just open pit burning is possibly less toxic long term than plastic getting into everything everywhere.

It depends on the plastic. Vinyls and other chlorinated plastics create dioxins with open pit burning - really, really, nasty. Non chlorinated plastics are less toxic, but I still wouldn't want to breath the smoke.
