They don't have "fellow countrymen", historically speaking. The greatest problems the Jews faced in any culture was when the host culture began to accept and integrate them, accepting them as fellow countrymen who are subject not to the mad ravings of the local Rabi, but instead to the local law. The insular mentality is fostered not so much from a sense of superiority, though that is certainly a factor, but in order to maintain the influence of the Jewish 'elite' over their group. If you compare and contrast Jewish "history" with black "history" you'll see the same "we wuz kangz" mentality as well as "we wuz the eternal victim because we're better than you" narrative. It's not similar: It's the same. The only real difference is that with Jews that narrative has been formed by people who are literate and capable of significant mental gymnastics.
