''Like how productive are lawyers?'' Lawyers and the medical doctors are some of the most over-rated professions; I know one dude who had worked as a paralegal for 8 years in a Chicago law firm (I had met him at work at Idleman telemarketing company as a night auditor in 1991), later he went to the aforementioned paralegal job in Chicago in the 90s. I met him again in early 2000s as a cab driver in Omaha! He told me he was demoralized in his quest to become a lawyer. Associates have to put a lot of hours to get consideration to become a partner. He had to bill the clients as much legally allowed, borderline theft, bilking the clients. He didn't want to do that for the rest of his life. Why so many 'good' lawyers want to become writers instead; a lot more money, freedom, and less hours, and conscience. He told me he would move to Nova Scotia, his girlfriend's hometown, to become a commercial fisherman once he saved enough money. Why I want to become a writer myself, working on 5 very good stories more or less concurrently.

I'd say they only exist because of a plentiful, decadent and inflated society... when things are good and plentiful they are here, when things get tight and real, we all know they are not needed. Maybe the soccer/ football guys can split wood, push a wheelbarrow lol but lawyers better get a real skill under their belt... no free loaders in a collapsed society!
