I wouldn't say its a fight against good and evil but rather greed that has developed. The main issue started to arise when large corporations started to develop after the industrial revolution. While it was to the benefit of those living at the time and us as well with cheap products, it has led to vast amounts of wealth in the hands of a few. When those few started lobbying and bribing government officials is when they started to get policy's made that benefited there corporations. I would make it about greed, thanks for helping me realize this actually lol.

But i believe there is more layers to it, Greed is one hell of a driver for evil, but I believe there is more to it, I would make the argument its more about desire not greed, because greed is kinda limited to money, but I believe mostly its desire for power.

But if I wanna focus on the fall of democracy. I think it would be better to discuss how greed led those who were already in the highest positions of power to slowly lose moral values for money and how that led to a corporate strangle on them. If I was writing a book on the fall of humanity, then maybe I would focus on power or good vs evil.

I believe they were just weak. Weak people can't control their desires, and whether they desire money power, or lust even, their weakness and loss of belief in god are what makes them more deceptive to the devil's whispers.
