Must be frustrating to deal with that. I can imagine it happening to anyone though belonging from one visible minority group going to another visibly different majority group's country. It's a tough hurdle to overcome but UK lads like Pakistani food now as a normal British dish. Takes time though, but yeah explaining it over and over to someone would get old.

I should clarify, it's not just an "American" thing. I see it happen overseas as well. I think it has to do with the intent of the question. Nowadays, I jokingly just ask, "Do you want to know my Nationality, where I grew up/live, or my Ethnicity?"
