The conception most religious folk have of God, is the same. That he is eternal without creation nothing needed to exist to create him because he is eternal, timeless and more importantly outside of causality. But our universe is causal, every thing that happens requires a former cause to have triggered it. It's illogical to conclude that such a universe would exist without a cause of its own.

I am aware of the conceptual similarities, I believe the idea of a creator or god is unnecessary and I am sure where they say god/creator, they are trying to describe the same thing, Yes our universe is causal, I do not deny this, however following causality to its logical conclusion leads me to the following problem of cause and effect, as you said every effect must have something that caused it. If we follow this train of logic we end up following an infinity in that every effect must have a cause before, if this is true then causality is infinite and has no first cause, or there must at some point be an effect without a cause which violates causality so I think it is logical to conclude causality exists in a infinite universe there is no first cause as this violates causality, only an effect that comes before ad infinitum.
