George Washington Carver developed crop rotation techniques using peanuts and sweet potatoes to restore soil fertility, transforming Southern agriculture. Though he didn’t invent peanut butter, he discovered over 300 uses for peanuts, including dyes, plastics, and cosmetics.

Ellen Eglin, an African American woman born in 1849 in Washington, D.C., invented a mechanical clothes wringer in the late 1800s to make laundry less labor-intensive.

Lewis Howard Latimer He made significant contributions to the development of the incandescent light bulb by inventing a more durable carbon filament in 1882, which made electric lighting practical, affordable, and long-lasting. This innovation was crucial to the commercial success of Thomas Edison’s system, and Latimer worked directly with Edison at the Edison Electric Light Company starting in 1884.

Percy Lavon Julian (1899 – 1975) – Aero-foam

Percy Lavon Julian was a renowned chemist who made many significant inventions. One of his creations was a soy protein coating paper that was a cheaper alternative to milk protein. This paper was used in a product called Aero-Foam, which was used to smother fires from burning gasoline and oil. During World War II, the U.S. Navy also used Aero-Foam. Although Aero-Foam had slow knockdown characteristics, it was safe to use as long as it was applied above the burning liquid.

Julian’s most famous inventions were synthetic hormones, including physostigmine and cortisone, also derived from soybean plants. Physostigmine is still used to treat glaucoma, while the cortisone is used for rheumatoid arthritis. In addition to his scientific achievements, Julian was a prominent civil rights activist and raised money for the NAACP’s legal and education divisions

Joseph Winters was an African-American inventor and abolitionist who patented a wagon-mounted fire escape ladder on May 7, 1878 (U.S. Patent #203,517). His invention allowed firefighters to quickly deploy a folding, metal-frame ladder directly from a horse-drawn fire wagon, solving the problem of heavy, cumbersome ladders that were difficult to carry and maneuver in narrow city streets

Richard B. Spikes invented and patented the automatic gear shift for automobiles on December 6, 1932, with U.S. Patent #1,889,814. His innovation allowed vehicles to shift gears automatically, eliminating the need for a clutch pedal and manual gear selection, making driving more accessible and less physically demanding—especially beneficial for women, elderly drivers, and people with disabilities.

James Kemper invented the modern vacuum toilet system used in airplanes, which was patented in 1975. Sarah Boone was an African American dressmaker born in 1832 in Craven County, North Carolina, who invented the modern ironing board. After migrating to New Haven, Connecticut, prior to the Civil War, she developed a narrow, curved, padded, and collapsible ironing board designed specifically for ironing the sleeves and bodices of fitted ladies' garments—areas that were difficult to press using the flat wooden planks or tables previously used. Her innovation addressed the challenges of ironing corsets and tailored clothing, which were popular in the 1890s.

Nathaniel Alexander, an African American inventor from Lynchburg, Virginia, patented a folding chair on July 7, 1911. His design was specifically intended for use in schools, churches, and auditoriums, with a unique book rest on the back of the chair that could be used by the person seated behind. This feature made it especially practical for choir members and churchgoers who needed a place to rest music sheets or prayer books.
