Free thought cannot be practiced fully because influences outside of one's lived experience is everywhere. In the past your worldview was largely shaped by your community is why there was social cohesion. A homogenous society means very little in the presence of nonstop subversion. Japan on its surface is a really safe country but if you look within it has one of the most authoritarian judicial system with its ultra high conviction rate (like Dubai) which makes it super safe. Japan has some of the most degenerate po-nagraphy, high self deletion, rampant poverty and anti social behavior which is not a good trade for being "Safe" There is very few solutions to our problems as some of these are as old as time itself. The reason for the rise of extremism isn't so much that people are becoming unhinged no, it is because folks refuse to acknowledge that it took decades for these problems to occur, and it will take decades to reverse but they want the problem fixed overnight. The rise of guys like Hitler, Gadaffi or a Bukele are overnight successes but you have to rely on removing people's human rights to do it. Is Bukele's strategy working? Yes, but when you do this you leave room open for someone to do the same thing but in the opposite direction using Bukele as a excuse.
