Yeah I completely agree with that (first point). I think you're absolutely correct to take the approach you did, and that's why I'm here. But to the second point, why you can't you delete their account and stop holding their email and username hostage? If the user wants to cease their affiliation with the platform, they should be able to do so, no? Meta will never do that, you could actually do that though.
