I totally agree that we have the "illusion of Democracy", that is very clear, and no one would make it to the top of the ballot if they weren't approved by the true powers that be... but... other countries like the UK have many more parties and they are headed down the same road and arguably faster and harder. They are full on 1984 over there, so I don't know if the number of parties makes any difference.
